How to reply automatically to Instagram comments
Published on
To reply to Instagram comments automatically, you use the Manychat trigger for comments on posts and reels: you choose the post, set the keywords, write the public reply and configure the private message (DM) for the person who commented. Meta allows only one private message per comment, sent up to 7 days after the comment. The conversation continues only if the person replies or taps a button.
What do you need before you start?
- Professional Instagram account (business or creator). Personal accounts do not connect to Manychat.
- Instagram connected to Manychat in Settings, Instagram, Connect. Manychat recommends connecting through Meta, which requires the Instagram account to be in a Meta business portfolio. Connecting through Instagram does not require a Meta Business account, but limits some features.
- A plan. The Free plan allows up to 4 active automations and 25 active contacts per month, which is enough to test. For more contacts, see the how much does Manychat cost guide.
How to create the automation step by step?
- In Manychat, open the Automations tab and click New automation.
- Click Start from scratch and choose the blank option.
- In the Flow Builder, click New trigger and choose, in the Instagram tab, "User comments on your Post or Reel".
- Choose where the trigger works: on a specific post or reel, on all posts and reels or on the next post you make.
- Set the keywords. You can include words (only those activate the automation), exclude words (comments with those words are ignored) or accept any comment.
- Write the public replies that appear under the comment. You can create several variants and Manychat alternates between them.
- Save the trigger and add an Instagram message step with the "Send as a Private Reply" option on. Without this option you cannot publish the automation.
- Test with the Preview button, which shows the result in Manychat or in Instagram itself.
- Click Set Live to activate.
Is there a faster way?
Yes. The quick automation "Auto-DM links from comments" puts everything on one screen. You choose the post and the keywords, write up to three public replies and configure the message sequence. In order, Manychat sends:
- Opening message with a button (optional).
- Email request (optional).
- Request to follow you before receiving the link (optional).
- Main message, with up to three links or text only.
- Reminder for people who did not tap the link (optional).
You can have only one "next post" automation active at a time. After it is triggered by a new post, you can create another.
How does the private message work?
The first private message has its own rules:
- It carries a single content block: text or image, with buttons or quick replies.
- It does not accept written reply requests (User input), Instagram DM lists, typing delays or dynamic blocks.
- It does not open the 24-hour window or add the person to your contact list.
The 24-hour window opens when the person replies to the message or taps a regular button or a quick reply. From then on they receive the next messages in the automation and become a subscribed contact. For this reason, an opening message with a button such as "I want to receive it" serves to open the conversation before you send the link.
Before the private message you can add other blocks: an action to tag the contacts of a campaign, a condition to send only to people who follow you, a short delay before the first message or a randomizer to test different versions.
If you want to see this sequence applied to sales, read the case study of the mentor with 1,000 followers who generated 1,315 euros in 21 days, who used Instagram automation to qualify potential customers.
Which Meta rules do you have to follow?
| Rule | What it says |
|---|---|
| Private messages per comment | 1 |
| Deadline for the private message | Up to 7 days after the comment |
| Live comments | The private message can only be sent during the broadcast |
| Following messages | Only if the person replies, and within 24 hours after the reply |
| Private reply limit | 750 per hour per professional account, on post and reel comments |
After the 24 hours, Instagram opens a 7-day window in which you can reply manually from the inbox, but automations are no longer delivered. Meta does not allow automated messages outside the 24-hour window. Anyone who ignores this rule risks warnings in Meta Business Suite, restrictions on sending messages and deactivation of the Instagram account. Manychat blocks by default scheduled sends to contacts outside the window.
Common errors
Expecting a second comment to trigger the automation
The trigger only works on each person's first comment on a post. If the same person comments again with the same keyword, the automation does not run again. This is a limitation of the Instagram API and affects all tools.
Using an "Open website" button in the first message
A button that only opens a link does not count as a reply. The person does not enter the contact list, the 24-hour window does not open and you cannot send more messages. Use a regular button or a quick reply first and send the link afterwards.
Always repeating the same public reply
Instagram can flag the replies as spam. Change the text from time to time, use different variants and avoid very short replies or replies with only emojis.
Having several triggers without keywords on all posts
If more than one trigger is configured for all posts without keywords, the oldest one always runs. With keywords, each word activates the corresponding automation.
Trying to automate posts that are not yours
On collaboration posts, the automation only works if the account that made the post is connected to Manychat. In that case, comments made on both profiles trigger the automation. On a remix, it only works if you own the original and the remix. Ads created only in Ads Manager, which do not appear on your profile, are not available in the post selector.
When does it make sense to move the conversation to WhatsApp?
From the Pro plan, Manychat lets you move contacts from Instagram to WhatsApp. On WhatsApp there is no 7-day window like Instagram's and messages have a delivery cost. Before you do it, read how to connect Manychat to WhatsApp.
